As one of the undisputed leaders in the Asian and World B-school rankings, IIM Calcutta has always had a captivating aura, and naturally attracts business students and enthusiasts the world over. Since being established as the first national institute for Post-Graduate studies and Research in Management by the Government of India in November 1961 in collaboration with Alfred P. Sloan School of Management (MIT), the Government of West Bengal, The Ford Foundation and Indian industry, the Institute has evolved into a mature institution with a unique culture and brand.
The vision of the institute is to emerge as an international centre of excellence in all facets of management education, rooted in Indian ethos and societal values. Over the last five decades, IIM Calcutta has developed a strong industry interface with the international and Indian business communities and thus provides an ideal platform for the dissemination of knowledge and an effective mechanism to inculcate the best international management practices.
Set in a lush green 135 acre campus with sylvan surroundings and serene lakes, the institute is an ideal location for the pursuit of knowledge and research work. Through cultivation of real world skills and healthy interaction with the corporate world, IIM Calcutta provides an atmosphere that is seldom found in other business schools of its stature. An optimum blend of theory fused with the best practices of both the academic and the corporate world provides an experience that is unmatched and inspirational.
Today, IIM Calcutta attracts the best talent in India - both in terms of students and faculty - and offers the widest variety of courses and programs in management research within the country.
Intaglio, IIM Calcutta's Annual International B-School meet, is the biggest B-school summit in Asia. With more than 16000 participants from over 60 countries and 35 international B-Schools and close to INR 2 million to be won as prize money, Intaglio becomes the grand stage for the best minds across the world to showcase their business acumen and battle it out in January, every year. Intaglio also provides a platform for the interaction of business leaders from the corporate, pioneers from academia and aspiring student leaders and thus becoming the melting pot for the genesis of path-breaking ideas.
Intaglio'11, which marked the onset of the Golden jubilee celebrations of the institute, was a phenomenal success and propelled the summit to a league if its own. Set in the middle of the two year Golden Jubilee celebrations of IIM Calcutta, Intaglio'12 will revel in the glory of the new Indian growth story by marrying the best minds in the country with the torch-bearing corporate entities shaping the country's future. While Intaglio'11 provided an opportunity to introspect on the past glory and to ideate a new vision for the future, Intaglio'12 with its aim of inspiring young leaders to break conventions and to create a new world order, has chosen to be the Tabula Rasa for the story ahead, providing a clean canvas for the world to paint what the future might look like.
"Tabula Rasa for the story ahead"
One by one, models and systems have proved inadequate. Tools that we thought would bring structure to our vision are fast becoming obsolete. Traditional economic policies are being touted irrelevant as the world is waking up to a new sun. We have entered an era that looks nothing like anybody had envisioned... an era which has already seen social media play a crucial role in overthrowing dictators...an era which has seen the launch of WikiLeaks raising questions about ethics and secrecy. Conflicting images are being painted on the horizon - images drawn by the collapse of the greatest economies the planet has seen on one hand, and those inspired by profitable and growing rural sector. Add to this an enlightened civil body speaking up against a corrupt bureaucratic machine and it is easy to see that we are dealing with an exciting uncertainty about the story of the world.
The future is not going to be an extrapolation of the past. The time has come for us to shed our outdated concepts and embrace the chaos of the flux we are all a part of. In order to do this one has to acknowledge the importance of creative thinking as much as critical. Only then can we start to make sense of how seemingly disparate incidences and evolving ideals add up to form the bigger picture. What is more important is to start with a blank slate or the tabula rasa - mindful of the past, yet embracing fresh ideas and methods to tackle the concerns of the future.
In keeping with last year's theme of looking at a roadmap for the years to come, Intaglio 2012 aims to explore the intriguing questions above and more. As we stand at a crucial juncture in the history of IIM Calcutta, having completed 50 glorious years of our existence, we invite the world to join us in this endeavour. How is the explosion of information going to alter dimensions for the Goliaths of the world? What will become of conventional definitions of democracy and happiness? Where does India fit in all of this?
The empty canvas is ready for your interpretation of the future- are you?
